On
entering the gateway pass between the statues of Brahma,
God Creator of Life, and Wisnu, God Preserver of Life. A
garden guide is available at the ticket office along with
other leaflets specific to features currently on display.
Photography is allowed but we suggest you do not touch the
plants or flowers as some can produce allergies.
There
are always a wide variety of blooming orchids throughout
the year ranging from the colourful and impressive Cattleya,
Dendrobium, Oncidium and Vandaceous hybrids. Also see Bulbophyllum
species with fascinating flowers and the large collection
of species from many genera including Dendrobium, Eria,
Coelogyne, Phragmipedium, Rhynchostylus, and Phalaenopsis.
Some of the species are so minute they need a magnifier
to appreciate. An Indonesian species collection is currently
being assembled. This is an orchid fancier's delight.
Paved
walkways pass among gardens displaying colourful bromeliads,
heliconias and a large variety of foliage plants while the
shadehouse is home to a variety of orchids, anthuriums,
pitcher plants (Nepenthe), hoyas, the 'bat flower' and other
colourful plants. Be sure to find the Vanilla vine and the
'Black Orchid', both of which flower frequently.
